This site came about as the result of a trip to the coffee shop, an idea that at one time seemed good but really wasn't, and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
While working on a clients web site I was also listening to news coverage of Katrina on the TV. I decided I needed a break and headed for the local coffee shop. While on the way home with the coffee the idea for the site presented itself loud and clear from out of nowhere. I spent the rest of the night working out the intricacies of the sites workings.
Most families are apart from each other during many hours of the day. As such, in 2000 I set up a safety net of contacts in the event of an emergency so that if we were separated we could eventually find each other. The need was due to the fact that I am located in a Chemical Valley and evacuations due to spills are a part of life.
After watching Katrina unfold I realized that my contact system had faults - major faults. I believe it was this realization that brought the solution by way of the idea while returning with the coffee. I needed a better solution and it was presented along with the awakening that I could also save other people the heartache and grief of separation in the event of a disaster.
After all, how could I possibly find my children if we were in different parts of the country due to an evacuation....the worry when a child is a couple of hours overdue is bad enough, but I can only imagine the worry and tortured feelings if a parent had no idea where their children and knowing that they also had no idea where their parents were.
Now with LookingForMyFamily.com I don't have to worry. If I am separated from my kids I know that as soon as they can they will use the site and that we will be reunited. It may take a few days, but just the peace of mind knowing that there is a place to find each other should alleviate much the terror, anguish, and panic of being lost from family members.
